Outreach/ Maple Festival

"Pancakes, or Buckwheats?" Maple syrup-making, and pancake breakfasts, craft on display, crisp, breezy March days, a little snow swirling in the streets and fields, dinner at the local inn ... what more could you ask for? Oh, a maple donut please.

Thanks to Carolyn Pohowsky, Executive Director of the Highland County Chamber of Commerce in Monterey, we were able to sample all of this and more. Ms. Pohowsky continues to be very helpful with our outreach efforts to find artisans who qualify for a free listing in the Alleghany Craft Network. A recent trip to the opening weekend of the Maple Festival netted a number of new listings and introductions to artisans from across the Commonwealth and beyond. Below are a few snapshots of the 2008 Maple Festival which opened March 8th & 9th. Known as "Virginia's Switzerland" Highland County is a beautiful rural setting that attracts thousands of visitors annually. Individual artisans, a couple of fine galleries, a craft cooperative and a fiber guild help make the Monterey area a prime location for finding local craft.
