ACV invites you to participate inoureducational programming. Our mission is to offer new and exciting ways you can experiment and grow to love the process of creating a wonderful work of art with your own hands.
The off-site program encourages the community to attend classes held in ACV juried artisans home studios. Participants can be assured of quality instruction because the instructors have already passed a rigid jury process that recognizes professional quality and consistency in they work the produce. 2- day weekend workshop, June 7 & 8, is designed to learn the fundamentals of tapestry weaving. Small class size ( 3-5 ) Students will work on a portable lap held loom. No previous experience necessary.

Directions: Charlottesville by pass 250 east towards Richmond. Get off on the Meadowbrook heights/Dairy Rd exit. ( exit after Hydraulic). Go across the bridge and go to 4 way stop. Turn left on Meadowbrook heights Rd. Go to the end and it will be Yorktown. Turn Right. Go one block, turn left on Bunker hill and the first driveway on the left is entrance to studio. Studio door faces Bunker Hill.
June 28-29 , 2008 9 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. - All levels
The metals program will be two days of learning to use the tools and techniques of metalsmithing, ( including 'hard' soldering with a torch, for previous students.) Tools and materials are provided for use in the class (silver extra). A list of suggested optional personal tools will be available on registration.
Prior students will continue exploring designs and metalsmithing techniques. For the continuing student raised metal projects will be explored. The first day will introduce basic jewelry techniques and tools like, forming, shaping, finishing with pliers, hammers, stakes, files, etc. A jeweler's saw will be used in "piercing designs" in sheet metal (cutting out intricate shapes0 and connections techniques employed to join pieces, including using 'hard' solder and a soldering torch. The student will design and being construction of projets in metal sheet and/or wire. Some precious stones will be available for use in designs, or students can bring their own stones.
The second day, students will contine working in sheet metals and wire, using brass and copper (silver and other stones available at cost). Designs may include pendants, pins, earrings, bracelets or other jewelry, other possible projects: box, bookmark, small vase.

This 2 day program will cover structure, building, and designs. This is a concentration course emphasizing problem solving in clay.
Hand Building: This workshop epxlores the fundamentals of forming in clay. Explore new and old approaches to experience techniques of forming. Pinching, coiling, doweling, drape molding, and slab construction will be explored. Texture and design will also be utilized. This stoneware clay firest to a higher temperature.(2380 degrees) and is stronger and more functional than many clay bodies. It is not porous. This clay can withstand winter temperatures. Clay, set of tools, glaze and firing included. Glazing and firing at a later date (approximately 2-3 weeks later) will be done in not more than 2 groups.

The Virginia Institute of Blacksmithing located at Clay Hill Forge in Charlottesville, is offering ongoing classes in blacksmithing from beginning to advanced levels. Young people are welcome but must be accompanied by a guardian if under the age of eighteen.
Beginning classes teach fire management, basic hammering techniques, and students will complete small projects. Intermediate classes build on beginning techniques while students complete specific projects. Specific descriptions and class dates can be found at www.vablacksmithing.org.

Classes are ongoing. Weekend classes are from 9 AM till 4 PM Saturday and Sunday. Evening classes are from 6 PM till 9 PM usually on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for four weeks. Open shop time is on Friday evenings from 6 PM till 9 PM.Fee:
Weekend classes are $180. Month long classes are $360. Open shop is $25.

From West of Charlottesville, take interstate 64 East to exit 121B, merge on Hwy 20 into Charlottesville. At the first light, turn right onto Carlton Rd. Cross the railroad tracks and turn right at the light at the bottom of the hill, E. Market St. Take an immediate right into the parking lot next to the building. The Institute is located in Suite G.
From East of Charlottesville, take interstate 64 West to exit 121, turn right onto Hwy 20 into Charlottesville. Directions continue as above.
Laurie Duxbury’s studio is located a few miles north of Charlottesville, Virginia. She offers both individual and class instruction in weaving. Beginning workshops cover planning and winding a warp, dressing the loom, weaving, and basic finishing techniques. These ongoing workshops are 4 days long. The $200 fee includes materials and loom use. Students need only bring their lunch.
Classes on basic weave structures meet monthly, usually on the third Tuesday of the month. Each class covers a different weave structure and includes woven samples, handouts, and weaving time. A basic knowledge of weaving is required. The fee for each class is $15 and they are 2-3 hours long. Space is limited so it’s best to sign up early.
Laurie is also enjoys working one on one with new or returning weavers to help plan for projects or refresh forgotten skills.
